Introduction

Hello, and welcome to my personal genealogy blog, Searching for Heritage!

My name is Addison, and I was born and raised in Greenville, South Carolina, USA.

I have been interested in genealogy since childhood, back when research usually required making trips to the local library to browse through compiled family history books and microfilm reels, taking notes for hours.

Over the years, I have extensively researched every branch of my family tree and even managed to solve a few long-standing mysteries, thanks to the availability of digital records and popularity of DNA testing in recent years. I've been looking for a way to share some of my research and family stories for a while, and figured a blog might be the best format.

By far, I have spent most of my time researching the Di Fresco, Weams, Keasler, and Mann families over the years. These particular ancestors initially posed the most unanswered questions, and have been the most interesting and rewarding to learn about. Many of my questions have now been answered, while others still remain a complete mystery.

Some of the upcoming posts I have planned are pretty lengthy, but hopefully they will be worth the read. Please feel free to contact me with any comments, questions, or corrections. At times, I might be slow to respond due to a busy work schedule, since genealogy is just a part-time hobby and there are only so many hours in a day. I will try my best to get back to you as soon as I can.

Autosomal DNA Results of an Abbeville Weems Descendant

  Background: When I first ordered a DNA test from Ancestry in 2017, one of my main goals was to learn more about my great-grandfather McDuffie Weams (1876 - 1943). He was the oldest of my great-grandparents by almost 20 years, and his background was always a bit of a family mystery. Supposedly, he was adopted as an orphaned child along with his brother by the Weams family, who lived near the town of Central in Pickens County, South Carolina. This simple explanation was basically all that was passed down about his family history, and it would turn out to be the beginning of a long, gradual process of filling in countless details through historical records and DNA evidence. Early on in my research, I learned that this particular Weams family consisted of Andrew Weams (1800 - 1870) and his wife Martha Neal (1805 - 1885), who were married in 1834 in Pickens District, SC. Forefathers of the Southern Weems Families

Research on the history of the surname Weems in the Southern United States will usually lead back to one of three large families who settled in the Carolinas and Tennessee during the mid to late 1700s. Thomas Weems was born around 1704, most likely in Pennsylvania or Maryland. He lived in Augusta County, Virginia from the mid-1740s until he settled in Abbeville, South Carolina around 1767. He had at least six children, and died between 1794 and 1800. One of his sons was also named Thomas, and he had at least two or three grandsons named Thomas. His wife's name was Elinor (or Eleanor) Jacobs. Thomas Scott Weems was born around 1730, and first appeared in Cheraw District, South Carolina around 1774. He had at least eight children, and died between 1800 and 1810. His wife's maiden name was probably Redfearn, and there is a likely connection to the Redfearn family of North Carolina.
